We are thrilled to announce Benjamin Fortier the winner of the playwriting competition for his monologue, Michael and the Saints. Set in a quaint tavern, Michael hangs with his Marine buddies at a small reunion. Michael reflects on his experiences in Iraq and what it means to serve and to carry the wounds of war.
Benjamin Fortier grew up in Northern Rhode Island. He enlisted the Marine Corps Reserve and within 10 days of high school graduation, he was standing on the yellow footprints at Parris Island. He served as an infantry team member with 1st Battalion, 25th Marines in Fallujah, Iraq in 2006. His latest book, Phantoms (published in 2023 by Dead Reckoning Collective) was awarded the Robert A. Gannon award for poetry dealing with Marine Corps life. His short play, The Path at Belleau Wood, was a vignette of the full-length play Across Time, produced by Returning Soldiers Speak and ArtsUp! LA. He is currently serving as the vice president of the 1st Battalion, 25th Marines Association.
“I am deeply honored to be a part of The Grief Dialogues: Memorial Day to share the meaning of this special day and why it was established. Though today’s society tends to absorb the sacrifice of our nation’s military members as yet another news item, I hope this presentation will help people to understand that each name is a person with a family, history and people who love them. These sacrifices are never made in vain and deserve all the honor and dignity that we can give them.”
Gwyn LaRee is a Desert Storm era Marine Corps Veteran with multiple disabilities from her time in service. A “closet” writer for most of her life, Gwyn has begun to share her stories and experiences with her work with the “Returning Soldiers Speak” program. Her initial symptoms from the Persian Gulf Syndrome placed her in a wheelchair for two years before she began to regain her mobility with the help of her service dog, Simba, from America’s VetDogs. Now working as a professional actor when she is not managing her small alpaca ranch in SW Washington state, Gwyn is always on the lookout for new Veteran connections, new stories to tell and new ways to integrate the Veteran and civilian communities.
